Would-be robbers flee after breaking into Paisley house

Raid linked to Asian jewel theft spree

- David Campbell

24.02.2018 Police investigating a spate of thefts from Asian family homes say a criminal gang targeted another house in Paisley.

Raiders ransacked a house in Lounsdale Road, raking through drawers and cupboards in search of loot but left empty-handed.

Three hooded raiders were seen fleeing the scene around 2.25pm on Wednesday afternoon as cops raced to the street.

Despite drafting in the dog unit and officers from across the area, the suspects made off to a nearby cycle track.

It is understood the trio forced their way into the house, while owners were out, in a hunt for expensive jewellery.

Investigators say an organised criminal gang is targeting addresses occupied by families of certain ethnic minorities across Renfrewshire and the central belt.

In the last two weeks officers have dealt with a number of break-ins, with a large quantity of jewellery being taken.

On Monday, February 19, a home in John Neilston Avenue in the town was targeted, with gems worth thousands of pounds taken.

And last week a home in Overton Crescent was raided by thieves who stole jewellery worth a four-figure sum .

Detectives believe a highlyorganised team of crooks is behind the recent spate of crimes and are appealing for information.

Inspector Tracy Harkins, from Paisley’s community policing team, said: “If you saw the three men in the vicinity of Lounsdale Road, in Paisley, on Wednesday afternoon then we want to hear from you.

“I would also urge communities to be vigilant. If you see any suspicious activity in the street don’t hesitate to let us know.”

Police believe the criminals carry out surveillance on their targets before they strike.

An investigation, led by a dedicated team of detectives, is underway across Renfrewshire and beyond to establish the identity of the masterminds behind the crime spree.
