We’ve got the grit

Davis reckons the squad has mindset to succeed

- Craig Ritchie

Harry Davis insists his St Mirren teammates have the mentality to deal with the rigours of their promotion push.

The Saints are gunning for a spot in the Premiership this season as they sit ahead of Livingston and Dundee United in the chasing pack.

Davis had been critical of the side in the wake of their 4-1 defeat to Livi last Saturday.

But the Englishman reckons there is enough grit and determination in the dressing room to ensure they do not let their stranglehold of the league summit loosen in the coming months.

Davis has already been involved in promotion chases while playing south of the border with Crewe Alexandra — and he admits he will lean on that experience in a bid to ensure Saints come out on top.

He said: “It is a different type of pressure being at the top of the table instead of the bottom.

“Being top can only be a good thing because you can’t wait for the games to come around. You just want the games to keep on coming and the results to continue.

“Confidence remains high, even after last Saturday’s result, and being at the top helps breed that.”

Davis added: “Having the New boss Jamie McKim wants Burgh to keep up the good work SEE PAGE 21 experience of it before helps and the more experience you can take, the better.

“The younger boys don’t say much, but if they want any experience or guidance they know I am here to pass that on.”

Davis reiterated his disappointment of the loss at Almondvale on Saturday — but, in hindsight, admits it could be the catalyst for the Saints going on another formidable run.

St Mirren’s cause has been aided in the postponement of Tuesday night’s game with Falkirk, and Davis reckons it will prove to be a positive for the side.

He added: “Today’s game is a chance to put things right from Saturday, so we are looking forward to the game and, hopefully, a positive result.

“Sometimes a defeat like that can be the kick up the bum you need.

“The lads have been focused this week, so, hopefully, we can put on a good performance and get back on the track.

“It is a good thing that the Falkirk game’s been moved. Three games in a week was not ideal, with the Brechin game today and the Dundee United game this Friday.

“Now that it is off, it is obviously a better schedule for us.

“But, first and foremost, we are looking just to this afternoon before we look at the Dundee United game.”
