Number plates swiped by crooks

-

Crooks have pinched a dozen number plates from cars across Renfrewshire in the last week.

Police say eight motors have been targeted in the Renfrew area since last weekend, and a further four cars in Paisley are also believed to have been hit.

It is understood that just one plate from each motor has been taken during the spree, but cops fear organised criminals are behind the thefts and are calling on motorists to stay vigilant.

Sergeant Geoff Smith, who is based in Johnstone, is urging car owners to report any thefts as they look to build an intelligence picture.

He said: “Since last weekend we have received reports of eight number plates being taken from cars in the Renfrew area.

“It is slightly unusual in that only one plate from each car has been stolen in each case.

“I would urge members of the public to be vigilant and also to please make sure they report any thefts of number plates.

“Some people may not think it is worth it but It would really help us to build up a picture of what is going on.

“Criminals are known to use stolen plates in the commission of more serous crimes, so it is important that we know if your plates have been taken – even if it is just one.”
