Gordon revs up his 4x4 to help emergency workers

A hero dad braved life-threatening snow drifts to drive hospital workers to their patients.

Gordon Goldie, 50, dug out his jeep to run firefighters, cops and care home staff in for their shifts.

He was bombarded with pleas for help after offering lifts on social media.

Gordon said: “One guy I picked up in the middle of the night was heading home from his shift at a care home.

“He had been walking for more than two hours when I pulled over to ask if I could help.

“I’ve been fairly constant and have only managed about an hour of sleep.

“It’s been worth it to help those who are doing such an important job.

“I’ll be helping out as long as there’s need for it.”

Gordon clocked up 120 miles before lunchtime, by running emergency workers to hospitals across Paisley and Glasgow.

A dad has taken to the snow to make sure hospital workers can treat patients.

Gordon Goldie, 50, also drove firefighters, cops and care home staff in for their shifts in his 4x4.

He reached out in an appeal which has been shared thousands of times online.

Gordon told how he felt compelled to help those stranded by the Beast from the East and has helped take dozens to the frontline.

He said: “I’ve been all over to the place. I got the idea after seeing a similar appeal by a driver down south.

“I’ve made several trips to the Royal Alexandra Hospital and to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

“I’ve dropped nurses off for the start of their shifts and am heading back out to pick them up when they are done.

“I’ve got a big car and work at wind farms, so I’m used to driving off-road and in challenging conditions.

“One guy I picked up in the middle of the night as he was heading home from his shift at a care home.

“He had been walking for more than two hours when I pulled over to ask if I could help.”

Gordon dug his car out of his drive in Renfrew’s Dean Park and has been driving through the night.

He has urged motorists without fourwheel drive to stay off the road.

The Good Samaritan has been inundated with messages of support and requests for help since launching the drive when snow hit on Wednesday.

Gordon added: “The conditions really are treacherous out there.

“Most cars just aren’t built for it and I’ve seen plenty getting stuck on the roads. If they can’t get out and have to abandon their car, it’s making this more difficult for others.

“It’s not just about having the right car, it’s also about knowing how to drive in the snow. I’ve been fairly constant and have only managed about an hour of sleep.

“It’s been worth it to help those who are doing such an important job.

“I’ll be helping out as long as there’s need for it.”

Gordon clocked up 120 miles in just one morning by shuttling hospital workers from Renfrew, Erskine and Paisley to the RAH and Glasgow.

He has also dropped staff off at Elderslie Care Home and even offered lifts to police and firemen.

Gordon has urged others with fourwheel-drive motors to pitch in if they are able to.
