Cheery boss has loved every minute of her career

06.03.2018 There’s no need for a check up on one Linwood woman who is marking 30 years at a dental practice.

Julie Stewart, 46, started working for Kelburn Dental Surgery in the town when she was just 16 years old.

The popular mum-of-two told the Express that although she loves her job, she fell into the world of dentistry by chance.

“When I was 16, I was working part- time at the Rosewood Restaurant, in Linwood,” she said.

“Staff from the surgery often came in for their dinner.

“One of the dentists told me that a job was opening up for a trainee and I thought why not?

“I applied on the Thursday, had an interview on the Friday and started the next week.”

Just a teenager, Julie was thrown in at the deep end from the beginning.

“It sounds silly, but I can remember my first day so well.

“I remember the patients and being taught how to sterilise everything. But loads of things have changed since those days.”

Moving from her dental nurse role to the reception, Julie now works as the practice manager.

Living and working in the town, Julie said she loves being local and in the heart of the community.

“Originally I stayed because it was convenient, especially with raising my two daughters, Sheryl, 18, and Iona, eight,” Julie added.

“But now I just really like the fact that I’ve grown to know so many different people in the community.

“Seeing them out and about is nice too.”

It seems local residents, as well as colleagues, feel the same way towards the dedicated worker.

Dentist Rachel Goldsmith, who joined the surgery in August, is full of praise for Julie and her “cheery nature”.

“When I came to this surgery in Linwood, I didn’t know anyone,” Rachel said.

“Julie was just wonderful. She made me feel so welcome.

“When any of our patients come into the surgery, the first person they see is Julie.

“She leaves a lasting impression because she is always smiling and so friendly.

“Whenever she is on holiday people are always asking after her.

“I love working with her every day – 30 years is an amazing achievement.”

Julie said there will be no big celebrations just yet, with just a normal week at work on the horizon.

“The big boss is off at the moment so plans as of yet,” she said. “I’m happy just working away.”
