- David Campbell

An evacuation was sparked over fears of a gas leak when a woman ploughed into a Paisley home after taking ill at the wheel.

The driver crashed through a garden and into the house in Nethercraigs Drive, in the Glenburn area.

Houses in the area were emptied due to fears a gas pipe had been struck in the incident.

Police and ambulance crews raced to the scene on Saturday afternoon after reports of a car leaving the road.

It is understood that the woman suffered a seizure at the wheel and lost control of her motor, causing it veer off the road at around 5.15pm.

She was rushed to the Royal Alexandra Hospital for treatment following the accident. A Scottish Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “We received a call at 1725 hours on Saturday, March 3, to attend an address in Paisley. We dispatched one ambulance, a paramedic response unit, the trauma team and our special operations response team to the scene.

“One female patient in their 30s was taken to Royal Alexandra Hospital.”

Residents were able to return to their homes a short time later after a gas engineer made it safe.

Police Scotland said: “Police attended to a report that a car had driven into a house in Nethercraigs Drive. The driver is believed to have taken unwell at the wheel and was taken to hospital by ambulance a short time later.

“Homes in the near vicinity were evacuated for a short time over fears that a gas pipe had been struck.

“A gas engineer, who was in the local area, arrived a short time later to make the area secure, allowing residents to return home.”

Scottish Fire and Rescue said they sent one appliance to the scene at around 5.30pm and left a short time later.
