Church won’t see people go hungry

-

A Paisley church is working hard to help the needy by donating to two foodbanks.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, in Glenburn, first started donating to Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire Foodbanks around five years ago.

And, since that time they have handed over countless items to help people who can’t afford to buy basic items such as soup and pasta.

The church’s Douglas Yates said: “Over the years we’ve donated hundreds, if not thousands of items.

“We collect them in big baskets at the church.

“People are always generous when we ask them to donate.

“I think that’s the case with most of the churches in the area.”

Members of the LDS Church in Paisley – who are also known as Mormons – give all sorts of food items, ranging from jam to UT milk.

“Sometimes we are told the foodbanks are running low on certain items so we’ll ask people for those things,” Mr Yates said. “People always help. “But it’s a sad reflection on society that food banks are needed.”

Both Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire Foodbanks are run by the Trusell Trust.

Their motto is ‘ helping people in crisis’, and the charity believes that no-one in the community should have to face going hungry.

Both foodbanks aim to provide three days’ nutritionally- balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to them when they are in crisis.

Once food is donated it is sorted and stored.

The foodbanks then partner with a wide range of care professionals such as doctors, health visitors, social workers and police to identify people in crisis and issue them with a foodbank voucher.

People can the take these to the foodbanks in exchange for supplies.
