Award was blooming great for florist Irene

-

Mrs Irene Brockwell, a Paisley florist, beamed as she was congratulated by her boss, Mr Patrick McGuire.

Irene won the title Florist if the Year at the Scottish finals of the Interflora competition at the Albany Hotel, Glasgow, in April 1979.

Irene, 30, of Almond Crescent, Foxbar, worked for Angela’s Flower Boutique in the High Street – and Mr McGuire, its owner, was proud of her.

“Winning this award is a tremendous achievement,” he said.

“Irene has worked very hard, and is a real asset to this shop.

“She now goes forward to the national finals in Brighton this November, and we believe she will be just as successful there.”

Irene submitted four examples of her work.

They were a funeral wreath, a bride’s bouquet, an arrangement for a boss to present to his secretary in Secretary Week and a special one to promote a product.

That arrangement, for aftershave, won Irene a gold award, the secretary’s arrangement got the silver prize, and the bride’s bouquet got the bronze award.

But she won a second gold award for receiving the highest marks for all three pieces combined.

Irene was to keep the trophy, a silver rose bowl engraved with her name, until the following year.

She hoped to add to this, and the collection of medals she had won since training in floristry, by coming home with the national award in November.
