Teaming up to clean up
It has now been six months since we launched the Team Up to Clean Up campaign and we’ve been overwhelmed by the level of support from the local community.
Without support from the communities, this campaign would fail.
We’ve had more than 65 community clean-ups take place, organised by local groups and assisted by ourselves, which have seen more than 1,100 volunteers don their bibs, grab their litter pickers and make their area brighter.
Through the ongoing campaign, we are seeing a tangible difference being made to the cleanliness of our streets, as well as seeing a real change in behaviour from residents who are either ensuring they don’t drop litter at all, or are taking the initiative to tidy the area.
It is community spirit like this that will make this campaign a success and ensure we maintain the positive results we are seeing so far.
But we’re conscious that it’s clear to everyone that this campaign is a two-way street.
We all need to work together to make a difference and we’re side by side with the community every step of the way.
We’ve invested £2.5 million across the next five years to improve Renfrewshire’s environment, which includes our roads being mechanically swept every two months, gullies being cleared and emptied as part of an enhanced programme and the removal of out-of-date signage across the area.
We’ve also upgraded our Rapid Response Team who undertake daily patrols and provide a fasttrack collection service of fly tipping, as well as employing six additional litter pickers who are out working in the community all year round.
Investing half a million pounds each year is a big commitment but it is one we are eager to make to ensure that we tackle the issues with cleanliness we face in our streets and begin to rectify them.
The changes won’t take place overnight, but we are already seeing the benefits of our enhanced programme and we will continue to work to make improvements in Renfrewshire that make the area brighter, cleaner and more attractive.
We’re fully committed to making Renfrewshire a place people are proud to live and work in and visit.
