Terror as firebugs target Paisley flats
Residents forced to leave their homes after blaze
Firebugs sparked terror in a block of Paisley flats after setting a wheelie bin alight in a common close.
Frightened residents were evacuated from the Brediland Road flats at around 10.30pm on Sunday night after the building was filled with smoke.
Detectives, who are treating the incident as wilful fireraising have launched a probe into the incident and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
A police photographer also visited the scene yesterday afternoon, as officers work to establish who was behind the blaze.
Residents in the block were also visited by firefighters as the investigation was stepped up.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “We are investigating a incident of wilful fireraising in Brediland Road in Paisley on Sunday evening.
“It appears that a wheelie bin was pulled into the common close of a block of flat and set alight.
“Residents from the building were evacuated as the building filled with smoke.
“This was a very serious incident that could have been much worse. The consequences of these types of crimes can be absolutely catastrophic.
“We are very keen to speak to anyone who may have information in relation to this incident.
“If you saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area before or after, then we would like to hear from you.”
A neighbour, who asked not to be identified, said the block had problems in the past.
She said: “We saw a police car and a CID car at around midnight. There have been problems with noise and things there before, but never anything like this that I know about.”
A spokesman for The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 10.22pm on Sunday to reports of a fire within the close area of a three-storey tenement building in Brediland Road.
“Operations Control mobilised a number of fire engines to the scene and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire. “There were no casualties. “Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”
Cops area also investigating a separate fire at Paisley Rugby Club, earlier the same night.
Yob set fire to the contents of a large industrial bin at the Ross Street site at around 6pm on Sunday evening.
Detectives once again appealed for witnesses to come forward on this incident, which they say is not linked to the fire in Brediland Road.
