They all walked the walk for care home

Big-hearted Buddies raise £8.5k for Hunterhill

- Kenneth Speirs

An amazing £8,500 has been raised for the residents of a care home, thanks to a group of supporters who walked more than 23 miles to bring in the cash.

The Buddies of Hunterhill took part in the recent Kiltwalk, a charity event that sees people don tartan and raise money for the cause of their choice.

The 12 members of the Buddies group were raising money for the residents of Hunterhill Care Home, in Paisley, and they were made up of family members, friends and staff.

Pauline McCartney, whose 78-yearold mother Jeanette is a resident of the home, was one of those taking part.

“It took a few weeks ro organise and for people to look out their walking boots,” she said.

“We all did a bit of training and went out walking in our own time.”

Any by the time the big day of the walk had ended, the hardy walkers had covered the 23.3 miles from the starting point of Glasgow Green to Balloch. “It took nine hours,” said Pauline. “We started at 9.30 and got to Balloch at 6.30.

“It was quite tiring, but we had a few pit stops along the way so that we could get refreshments.

“The last five miles were really tough. “It felt as if it was going on forever. “But it was worth it.” The money raised by the group was boosted by a 40 per cent donation from the Hunter Foundation, plus a £1000 donation from Arnold Clark. The cash will be used for a number of things, including hiring a wheelchair-friendly bus for residents’ outings.

Entertainers will be brought in too to give residents a show.

“And there’s a lovely garden at the home, we’ll be able to get things for that,” Pauline added.

Everyone taking part expressed their thanks to Houston Kiltmakers of Paisley for supplying their kilts free of charge.
