Rotarians will become special tourist guides

Club will welcome group from German town Fürth

- Kenneth Speirs

25.05.2018 It will be “Wilkommen in Paisley!” next week as the hand of friendship is extended to a group of visitors from our twin town.

The Rotary Club of Paisley has invited its opposite numbers from Fürth in Germany for a four-night stay during which they will get the chance to visit some of the town’s attractions.

And that includes look in at ‘The Secret Collection’, which is the new store in the High Street where many of the Paisley Museum’s treasured are stored.

Douglas Paxton, secretary of the Rotary Club of Paisley, said: “We’ve spoken to the provost and she’s organised for us to have a private tour of The Secret Collection.

“There will be a civic lunch in Paisley Abbey on Thursday and then a tour of Sma Shot Cottages in the afternoon.

“It’s the Rotary Club of Fürth and their families who will be coming – there’s 17 of them.

“On that evening there will be a dinner at the David Lloyd Club, which is where the Rotary Club of Paisley meet.

“On the Friday we are going to Mount Stewart House on the Isle of Bute. “This will be their fifth visit. “We’ve been to Fürth five times. “Every year there is a visitation. “So this is the 10th year of the visits.”

Mr Paxton said his club’s links with Fürth Rotary came about because of the town’s links with Fürth.

“And also there was a school link as well,” he said.

“One of our members is an exrector of Paisley Grammar, John Pears.

“So there’s links with the town and school exchanges.”

The Rotary Club of Paisley will also be taking the German visitors to Glasgow Cathedral for a tour on the Saturday of the visit.

“Then that evening one of our members is hosting an ‘at home’,” Mr Paxton said. “They’ll get an Indian meal that night.”

And there should be no communications problems during the visit.

“John Pears speaks German, he’s pretty good,” Mr Paxton.

“And they speak embarrassingly good English.”

Paisley has been twinned with Fürth, which is in Northern Bavaria, since 1969.
