Cancer-stricken mum responds well to vital treatment in Germany
Leighanne home today
A warm welcome home is waiting for a cancerstricken mum as she returns from specialist treatment in Germany.
Brave mum-of-one Leighanne Sanderson is set to arrive in her hometown of Renfrew today after travelling abroad for vital cancer treatment.
The experimental treatment, at Hallwang Private Oncology Clinic in Dornstetten, uses immunotherapy and infusions to help prolong – and in some case save – the lives of cancer patients.
T h i r t y - e i g h t - y e a r- o l d Leighanne has stage four brain cancer and was told by NHS doctors that she only had months left to live.
After discovering treatment from the Dornstetten clinic could save her sister, Katie Sanderson launched a fundraising campaign called Let’s Get Leighanne to Germany.
In just 12 weeks, family and friends have raised almost £90,000 – enough to pay for Leighanne’s initial treatment and transport.
Following a week at the clinic, she and sister Katie are looking forward to returning home.
Katie took to Facebook to ensure family and friends that Leighanne had responded well to the treatment and asked kindhearted supporters to “keep praying” for her sister.
Katie told the Paisley Daily Express: “It was a very hard experience but all Leighanne’s obs and bloods were great.
“She will need to go back to Germany in two and a half weeks though, for further treatment, and again for a scan in five to six weeks.”
On Monday, Katie and Leighanne set off in an ambulance to begin their lengthy journey home.
In a post on Facebook Katie wrote: “We will be travelling by ambulance, so a long journey ahead, but this amazing team and the ambulance service has come forward to help us with all our travelling back and forth.
“Keep saying your prayers and fingers crossed that it’s helping.
“Thank you all so much for your amazing help so far.”
