Primary pupils hit the right notes for charity

School choir boosts kids’cancer appeal

- Kenneth Speirs

A Paisley school choir has raised more than £ 1400 for a children’s cancer charity.

The St John Ogilvie Singers brought in the money at a special concert where they performed songs from film musicals.

And the cash is going to the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Schiehallion Appeal, which aims to bring groundbreaking new treatments to Scotland.

Lorna Murray, headteacher at St John Ogilvie, said: “As a school, we are delighted to be able to support this appeal, especially as one of our own pupils, Freya Collins, received treatment in the Schiehallion ward.

“She and the rest of the SJO Singers gave us a wonderful evening of entertainment.”

As well as music from the children there was also a performance from the SJO Mums’ Choir.

This was formed for a oneoff performance last year but was brought back by popular demand.

Susan Thompson, who leads the SJO Singers, said: “The parents, carers and staff at the school are incredibly supportive of the SJO Singers and this enabled us to raise such a great sum for a charity that’s close to all our hearts.”

According to the appeal, two children in Scotland are diagnosed with cancer every week.

More than two thirds of those children will be treated in wards 2A and 2B, known to most people as Schiehallion, at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow.

Although eight-in-ten children with cancer will survive beyond five years, cancer is still one of the leading causes of death of children in Scotland.

The Schiehallion Appeal aims to raise £ 500,000 to enhance its clinical trials centre and bring more of the latest cancer treatments to Scotland.

Clinical trials give children access to a new type of treatment when conventional treatments have failed.
