Community support for one-way road bid

Councillor’s plan to make busy street safer

- Jack Thomson

A proposal to introduce a oneway road in Paisley “cannot be guaranteed” by Renfrewshire Council.

The opening of a new takeaway has seen increased footfall in Sanda Way, Glenburn, meaning the road has become increasingly busier with cars.

That has prompted confusion between drivers as to who has the right of way, with activists warning of the risk of accidents

Shirley McLean, chairwoman of Glenburn Tenants and Residents Association, said: “You don’t know who has the right of way.

“There are accidents waiting to happen.

“It’s particularly busy because of how popular the takeaways are and the Keystore is a well used shop. It opens early until late at night.

“I think a one-way system is definitely a solution because it would be one way in and one way out.”

Paisley Southeast Labour Councillor Eddie Devine has written to Renfrewshire Council about the prospect of introducing a system, which would see Sanda Way/Fairway Avenue northbound from May Road to Cumbrae Road become a one-way street.

He said: “The Oriental Asian Cuisine has just exploded. It’s proven to be extremely popular, which is a good thing.

“It’s up to us as councillors to try and alleviate those issues and a one-way system would do it.

“It wouldn’t solve all problems but people have been calling for this for years.

“The next step would be the council speaking to the neighbours to get an idea to see if they’re in favour of it.

“I see it as helping a great deal if we get this done.”

However, Renfrewshire Council has said the proposal would need an evaluation to determine whether it is possible.

A spokesman said: “We are aware of Councillor Devine’s proposal.

“This proposal will require to be subject to evaluation and consultation to determine its feasibility.

“Creating a one- way street requires the promotion of a traffic regulation order which involves a statutory consultation process and therefore its outcome cannot be guaranteed.”
