Fitzy: So far...so good

Tony’s feeling confident

- Craig Ritchie

St Mirren chief executive Tony Fitzpatrick insists the side are shaping up well ahead of the new season kicking off.

Fitzpatrick has been working tirelessly behind the scenes as he looks to help boost the ranks by pressing ahead with Alan Stubbs’ transfer targets.

The pair have already managed to bring Josh Heaton, Cody Cooke and Jeff King to the club, while they continue to work away on a shortlist of potential new recruits for the Paisley side over the coming weeks.

Fitzpatrick says he is happy with how things have gone so far but admits he has been constantly on the phone trying to get deals done.

Fitzpatrick joked: “Recruitment has been going very well, I have spent half my life on the phone. Now I know why it is called a ‘cell’ phone, I feel like a prisoner. But we are working away. It is vital that we get new players in.

“It is important that we press on with that and it is something that we will continue to do.”

Meanwhile, Fitzpatrick revealed that the new players have settled in well having seen them in action in La Manga.

The chief executive reckons that the trip was the perfect opportunity for the players and new management team all to get to know one another in a setting that will also benefit them on the field.

He added: “La Manga was arranged before Alan came in, but to have gone with five new players is a great opportunity.

“It is difficult when you are home because the players come back in for training, then they are away.

“I think for the new players it was great for them to get to know the players and get put through their paces. It has allowed them all to get to know the players and staff already at the club, and I can’t speak highly enough of them.”
