David’s still on top of the world over fab film job

Paisley cameraman lived the World Cup dream

A football-daft cameraman from Paisley has returned from the job of a lifetime.

David Montgomery, 27, scored big when he got offered the opportunity to film matches at the FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The talented Buddie got a kick start in filming sport after a work experience placement at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014, where he met the director for the World Cup.

David said: “In December, he phoned me to ask if I was available to go to Russia in the summer.

“I had said yes before he had finished asking the question.”

As creative director at his own video content company, Media Monty, David has had his fair share of breathtaking experiences.

But none come close to filming devoted footie fans flocking to the world’s biggest sporting event.

“It was incredible. To see so many people from across the world come together to celebrate such a big occasion was a joy to film,” said David.

“The passion fans have singing their national anthem is something that will stay with me forever.

“To film a quarter final in Russia with the home nation playing was a special moment.”

The filming gig was a dream come true for the Paisley lad, who has been cheering on St Mirren since he was a boy.

“My dad Gary is a massive St Mirren fan and he has taken me along to games since I was about three,” explained David.

“One of my highlights at the World Cup was filming Aaron Mooy, an ex-Buddie who plays for the Australia national team.”

David says his true ‘pinch-me moment’ came when he got to film his hero on his very first day.

“I had a variety of roles on matchday and also on the build up to the game,” David said.

“My dream was always to film Ronaldo and my first job at the World Cup was to film his arrival at the stadium.

“Filming the Spain team was on my bucket list, which happened on the same day.”

David said the thrill of seeing his heroes in real life could only be matched by the passion of the crowds.

He said: “It is unpredictable in every sense. Fans go to every game, no matter how small their club or team are and hope that this is their day and they can get a win.

“Every game in this World Cup had something special about it and I can’t wait to watch the coverage back.”

Although he is just fresh off the plane from Russia, David already has his sights on the next World Cup – and there is one team in particular he would like to see shine.

“Hopefully, I will be involved in the coverage of future World Cups,” he said.

“When you look at countries such as Croatia and Uruguay who have small populations but incredible squads, it gives Scotland a bit of hope.

“The dream really is to turn up to film a World Cup match in a kilt.”
