‘Frew aim to topple Greenock

Side ready for tough clash

- Mick Hydes

R e n f rew boast a 100 per cent record heading into tonight’s clash with Greenock following wins over Port Glasgow and St Anthony’s.

‘ Frew got their revamped Se c t i o n a l League Cup campaign off to a winning 1-0 start on Friday but were made to fight all the way by the Port with a display that left comanager Colin Clark less than impressed.

Clark told Express Sport: “We had no shape and the basics in our game were poor. Our movement was lacking and overall it was not very good.

“Port were positive and we hardly created any chances. We were better in the second half but overall we were still poor although we had a bit more impetus towards the end and scored a good goal with a nice finish.

“However, we still won and kept a clean sheet and this means we have something to work on but we have a lot of work to do before the league games start and we have Pollok here so I’m expecting that to be tough. We have to improve and the players know that themselves.”

Port Glasgow were the better side in the first half and wasted chances through Jasper Donnelly and Danny Bamford of which Daniel McLeay in the home goal had to be alert.

Frew had to re-shuffle mid-way through the half when losing Paddy O’Keefe to a head- knock in the penalty area with Andy MacLennan taking his place. After the break, Frew did improve with hit-man Ritchie MacIntosh coming into the game gradually and linking up well with David McKenna.

They eventually hit the target when MacLennan’s left-flank corner was rifled home on the edge of the penalty area by Dom Innes.

Port lost substitute Luke Hemphill in the dying seconds for an alleged elbowing incident.

‘Frew then travelled to St Anthony’s on Monday night, where they clearly heeded their gaffer’s warning.

The top- flight side strolled to a 4-0 win thanks to goals from Darren Jones, Kieran Maxwell, Craig Dallas and Thomas Miller to put their fate in their own hands ahead of tonight’s clash with Greenock at New Western Park.
