A change of PACE for youth theatre

New-look group to welcome older members

- Kenneth Speirs

Paisley’s popular PACE youth theatre has launched a brand new- look as it prepares to open its doors to older performers.

The company, based at the Spires studio, in Oakshaw, has designed a fresh and colourful logo as it gets ready to launch a new year of classes.

And this year for the first time, the age range of those who can take part has been extended from 18 up to 21 years old.

Jenni Mason, who took over as artistic director of PACE in April, is excited about the new times ahead.

She said: “The new branding reflects a new era for PACE.

“We wanted something that was fresh and contemporary that would appeal to young people.

“As a company we are going through a lot of changes – a lot of really positive changes – and we wanted our branding to reflect those changes.”

PACE is about to launch its new autumn season of work for young people with a refreshed programme.

“We have a new group structure, new group names, and a new syllabus that we’re putting into place,” Jenni Mason said.

“At the heart of that we are also launching a lot of additional opportunities for young people, so we’re launching our new masterclass programme which is called ‘PACEPlus’ to give young people the opportunity to come and do more with us throughout the week.

“So we’ll have lots of specialists coming in to do things like masterclasses, stage writing or acting for television. Things that are a bit more specific and which we wouldn’t necessarily cover within the youth theatre term.

“It’s a really exciting time for us and our brand is part of that.”

The extended age range is a big part of the new-look PACE too.

“We previously went up to the age of 18 but we are now going to 21,” Jenni said.

“I think people want to keep coming.

“And there are clear benefits right the way up to 21 and beyond as well, so we want to give them opportunities to keep learning and keep developing, and it’s something we might even expand further in the future.”

Jenni is encouraging every young person to give PACE a go.

“We are about to start our new year, so it’s an ideal time to come along and join PACE,” she said.

“There will be lots of new people starting and there’s lots of things going on in the building, so we would love to welcome anyone that is interested in being part of our group.”
