Provost leads the tributes to popular councillor

-

A popular Labour councillor who was a “one-off” has been remembered at a meeting of Renfrewshire Council.

Thursday marked the first full meeting since Alex Murrin’s passing on July 11, as elected members took the opportunity to pay tribute.

As she opened the meeting, Provost Lorraine Cameron said: “I would like to take a moment to remember the late Councillor Alex Murrin.

“This is the first moment we have had to do so since his passing in July.

“Alex served on lots of the main policy boards but was probably best known by everyone for his role as convener of the licensing board.

“He was a family man. I know his family, friends and political colleagues will miss him very much.”

Councillor Eddie Devine added: “Alex was a one-off.”

The Labour group leader then took the opportunity to reflect on how Alex served his constituents.

“He had a particular style that was very blunt and to the point,” Councillor Devine said.

“We will miss him very much at the Labour group.”

Councillor Jim Sharkey said Alex – who represented Renfrew North – was “so loved by his constituents”.

He added: “Alex was a political man and a Labour man.

“During my first sessions here as a councillor, I went down to his allotments and saw how loved he was by constituents.”
