Paisley Grammar parents look at their options

-

The Paisley school closures took a shock new twist.

Paisley Grammar School parents revealed they were considering sending their children to a local Roman Catholic school, we reported in September 1978.

The Sacred Heart High School was a favoured option, along with Glasgow secondary Penilee, rather than have their children bussed to Merksworth High.

As the Grammar parents strengthened their campaign lines in their fight to keep the school open, one parent asked for 600 potential parental request forms from Strathclyde Region.

These were the forms that had to be completed if a child was to go to a school outside the local catchment area.

Mrs Alison Munro, of Gartmore Road, Paisley, had two children at Paisley Grammar and one at Williamsburgh Primary, its feeder school, and she had already spoken to staff at Sacred Heart RC High to see if she could send her children

there if the Grammar closed.

“If this schools’ review group go ahead and shut the Grammar and bus children across Paisley to Merksworth, I’m looking at all the alternatives.”

And she added: “Parents I have spoken to are also getting interested in getting placing requests for Sacred Heart and Penilee.”

Mrs Munro and other parents said they had nothing against Merksworth High.

“It believe it’s a very nice school,” she said.

But she objected that children would have to get buses or walk 50 minutes beside some of Paisley’s busiest roads.
