Rhyme book about a ball, was inspired by my grandson’s wall

Little Kian’s decorations sparked poetry story

- Kenneth Speirs

A Paisley grandad was inspired to write a children’s book when his new grandson’s nursery was being decorated.

It was four years ago that youngster Kian was born, and stencils featuring rabbits fishing for stars were being put on the room’s walls to welcome him into the world.

And that got Steven Barr, from Glenburn, thinking.

The 49-year-old said: “I looked at it and I thought there’s a story in that, there’s something there. “And I wanted to write something for him. “So I started to put a poem together, and it became A Rabbit’s Tale.”

The book, which Mr Barr has self-published as an ebook on Amazon, is a story in rhyme.

And it also came about through Mr Barr’s desire to take up writing.

“I did my Higher English as an adult. I was 32 when I went back to Reid Kerr College and did it,” he said.

“I didn’t come away from one of my O Levels from school, so I thought in a leap of faith I would try the Higher. “Wring is an interest and being creative.” Mr Barr, who has been a pastor at Renfrew Christian Fellowship for nearly two years, then set about writing is first ever book and has come up with a charming tale of a rabbit who has an adventure.

“It’s about an annual event that happens in the woodlands,” he said.

“It’s the annual summer ball, they dance and they celebrate, and just enjoy this party under the stars,”

As church pastor, Mr Barr is a committed Christian, but says his book doesn’t have a religious element.

“But it doesn’t have a non-Christian element either,” he added. “It’s just a sort of traditional bedtime story. “It’s fun. It sparks the imagination.” And another book by Mr Barr is set come out soon.

“It’s been written and is being illustrated at the moment,” he said. “It’s called ‘Mr Pleasant the Pheasant’.” Hard copies of A Rabbit’s Tale, which is illustrated by Grace Sandford, and costs £7, are
