Storm closes the A760

-

Heavy rain and wind forced the closure of a main road and morning rush hour disruption for hundreds a c ross Renfrewshire yesterday.

A yellow weather warning had been issued by the Met Office for the area with heavy rain and high winds expected from early Monday night until midnight yesterday.

In Renfrewshire, council teams were monitoring the weather closely situation and eventually closed the A760 in Lochwinnoch as a result of flooding.

The road is the main one into the village and runs between Castle Semple Loch and Loch Barr.

Renfrewshire Council said: “Our team responded to reports of flooding this morning on the A760 in Lochwinnoch, resulting in a closure of the road.

“There have also been some minor localised issues but all services have operated as normal throughout the day. We will be continuing to monitor the situation across Renfrewshire over the next 12 hours as the weather continues.”

Rush hour traffic was heavy with a four-car crash at junction 27 Arkleston leading to major delays on the M8.

The incident happened just after 6am yesterday morning on the westbound side of the busy motorway.

Two of the three lanes were closed and the incident caused major tailbacks along the M8 and A737 which continued for much of rush hour.

Train services through Renfrewshire were disrupted by a tree resting against overhead wires near Elderslie which caused a failure with the electricity supply.

Engineers from ScotRail attended and cut the tree down but services were disrupted from the beginning of service until approximately 10am.

The failure affected services between Paisley Gilmour Street and Kilwinning as well as services between Glasgow and Ayr, Ardrossan, Largs and Kilmarnock.

ScotRail arranged for passengers holding valid tickets to use them on Stagecoach buses between Ayr and Glasgow and McGills buses between Largs and Paisley.

A ScotRail spokesperson said: “We’re sorry to customers for the disruption and share their frustration when these things happen.

“Anyone who has been delayed by 30 minutes or more is entitled to compensation under our Delay Repay Guarantee. To claim, customers just need to keep hold of their ticket and visit our website.”
