Africa adventure comes highly recommended
A Paisley teacher is urging fellow professionals to take part in an amazing experience that has influenced her lessons at the town’s Mary Russell School.
Susan Hamill spent the summer in Uganda to improve learning and teaching within communities there.
And she is now recommending that others take part in the programme, which is part of Global Learning Partnerships (GLP), as it opens its appeal for 2019 applications.
Susan said:“Although there are many struggles, there are many positives that can be learned from Ugandan teachers and I now inject a little Uganda into everything I do.
“The experience has made me more confident in my abilities as a teacher and I believe that this will have a positive impact on pupils and staff at my school.
“I would encourage others to take advantage of this professional and development opportunity.
“It will hugely impact your personal and professional lives.”
GLP programme manager Georgea Hughes said meaningful global education is essential for the world’s future.
She said:“There has never been a greater need to develop young people’s understanding of their responsibility to actively contribute towards a more equitable and sustainable world,”she said.
More than 20 practitioners will be invited to join the GLP network in 2019. GLP, which is managed and majority-funded by The Wood Foundation, includes a month spent in Rwanda or Uganda and several events before and after post-travel.
It works in partnership with ethical local organisations IEE Rwanda and Redearth Education to build the capacity of education professionals within host countries.
Through community-based placements, GLP facilitates the sharing of knowledge, ideas and best practice to support improvements in teaching and learning within a local context.
