Ryan: Change is in the wind

Edwards is sure Buddies’ fortunes will turn around

Aussie midfielder Ryan Edwards insists St Mirren’s torrid run of league results doesn’t reflect the improvements being made under gaffer Oran Kearney.

The Saints fell to yet another away defeat after struggling to get going against St Johnstone on Saturday and the 2-0 scoreline could very well have been much worse but for the home side missing two spot kicks.

Kearney’s side failed to produce a single effort on goal in Perth – a frightening statistic for a side in desperate need of goals and confidence.

But former Partick man Edwards, who was a second half substitute against Tommy Wright’s men, believes that despite recent poor results he has sensed a change of mentality will lead to a turnaround in fortunes.

He told Express Sport: “You can sense a little change.

“I’ve been in a similar dressing room with similar results. That’s been seven or eight games without a win.

“It is matter of keeping on doing what we are doing and working hard in training and hopefully it will turn the next game.

“There are elements there in our performances since the new manager came in, that it is there to change for the better.

“Hopefully it will happen sooner rather than later before we get too far away from the pack.”

The 24-year-old, who has found first-team chances hard to come by under Kearney, is under no illusions that the score on Saturday could have been far worse.

He added: “We need to improve our away form. It hasn’t been good enough.

“We spoke about having a good 45 minute performance at Kilmarnock last Saturday and we were hoping to bring that here and have a good performance for the whole 90 minutes.

“It just wasn’t good enough all around.

“Tony Watt should have had a hat-trick. He scored two goals and we didn’t really have any clear-cut chances.”
