More must to be done to tackle rise in kids gambling Newlands urges intervention

- Jack Thomson

Local Democracy Reporter A Paisley MP has called for more to be done to tackle the damaging impact of gambling.

The Gambling Commission has published a report showing the number of children classed as having a gambling problem nationally has risen to 50,000 in just two years.

It also found in the last 12 months, 39 per cent of children between the age of 11 and 17 have spent their own money on gambling.

In the last week, the figure stands at 14 per cent, with young people spending an average of £16.

Some youngsters have said they have used betting shops or gambled online, despite them being illegal for those under the age of 18.

And Gavin Newlands MP has challenged the UK Government to get serious on the problem by implementing a joined-up strategy to tackle the threat it poses across society.

He said: “Problem gambling devastates lives, and it is an issue that is growing every day.

“The number of children between the ages of 11 to 16 who have gambled has increased dramatically in the last few years, usually using machines, including fixed odd betting terminals.

“Addictive gambling machines are scourge on our communities and affect thousands of families.

“The UK Government should begin a review of the impact of gambling on public-health and take decisive action against addictive and exploitative gambling.”
