Banned driver jailed after he failed to complete work order

Sheriff slams him for repeatedly wasting his time

A banned driver has been caged for refusing to complete community service.

Ismail Mukisa, 27, was ordered to complete unpaid work after he was caught on the road with no licence, insurance or MOT.

He flouted punishment, claiming he was caring for his diabetic father and grief-stricken since his brother had died.

Mukisa was locked up after being summoned to Paisley Sheriff Court.

Sheriff David Pender blasted him for wasting his time.

He said: “This has been an abysmal effort and not just since the last calling of the case – it’s since the outset of the order.

“I said to you previously, I was sorry to hear about the death of your brother.

“You’ve told me you’ll do the work and have not done it and told me again you’d do it and not done it.”

Mukisa was nabbed behind the wheel of his black Suzuki SX4 fivedoor hatchback in Napier Street, Johnstone, last August 4.

He was ordered to complete 300 hours of unpaid work in nine months after admitting the offence.

But the motorist repeatedly failed to turn up for shifts.

He claimed he was absent because he was struggling for money when his benefits were sanctioned.

Defence lawyer Michael McKeown claimed his client had also been struggling with grief following the death of his brother and had been preoccupied looking after his dad.

He said: “He is committed to completing the remaining hours.”

Mukisa appeared shellshocked and held his head in his hands when he was told he would be remanded.

He clasped his hands and pleaded: “Come on – my papa is sick.”

Mukisa has been remanded for a fortnight before a decision is made on his final punishment.

Sheri f f Pender called for background reports. He added: “The order is revoked, bail is refused and you’ll go to custody.”

Mukisa, of Morar Drive, Linwood, will be hauled back to the dock for sentencing next month.
