Bowlers are on a roll for charity
Hawkhead ladies raise £2,000 for Macmillan
Cancer charity bosses have been bowled over by generous fundraisers in Paisley.
The Ladies Section at Hawkhead Bowling Club handed over £2,000 to Macmillan Cancer Support from two bumper sales.
Ladies’ president at the Gartmore Road club, Pamela Earl, 67, spearheaded the drive and thanked club members and the bowling community for their support.
She told the Paisley Daily Express: “Each year the president chooses a charity for the club to support so I selected Macmillan as it is very close to my heart.
“My father Charles Alexander was supported by Macmillan nurses at home when he passed.
“We held two sales and raised lots of money for the charity. It does such good work and when I found out how few nurses there were in Scotland I wanted to support them.
“My mum Agnes, who is 88, made marmalade and jams and I made jam , which we sold at the club.
“And my husband James grew plants which we sold.
“We excelled ourselves this year, I think.”
Pamela insisted it was a team effort with the whole club turning out to back the cause.
She added: “We had two days at the club, one organised by the club and one I put on myself. But it was the ladies from the club who really made it all a success.
“They came along and supported the days and helped put it all together.
“And also people from other clubs came along and brought their friends, who all bought things.”
Helping Macmillan Cancer Support was always a priority for Pam.
“I stipulated that I wanted all the money to stay here in Scotland so it goes to helping people with cancer close to home,” she said.
“I don’t think there is a family anywhere that hasn’t been affected by cancer in some way.
“When I took my year as president on I knew that was the charity I wanted to support,” she explained.
