Gaffer hails new first-team coach

-

Jimmy Nicholl has been there, seen it, done it during an illustrious career both on and off the park.

After taking up the role of first team coach of St Mirren, Buddies boss Oran Kearney is hoping a little bit of his magic can rub off in Paisley.

The former Manchester United and Rangers defender has been in the job for over a fortnight now.

And Kearney insists his fellow Northern Irishman is already making a difference behind the scenes as the side look to clamber up the table following a stuttering season that finds them sitting bottom of the league.

Kearney said:“I’ve been delighted in all aspects of it. From a football knowledge point of view it has been brilliant.

“He is an impressive guy. It probably took me two or three weeks to learn everybody’s name and get to grips with everybody at the club, throughout the staff and the training ground.

“Meanwhile, Jimmy comes in for one morning and he knows everybody – it’s crazy. He is brilliant in that way and the way he builds relationships with players is also great. He is just a super guy to have about.”

Nicholl is well-known for his wit and humour as well as his management and coaching style, which includes stints at the likes of Aberdeen, Hibs, Rangers and Raith Rovers.

Kearney admits that Nicholl’s personality could also have a massive influence on the remainder of the campaign.

He added:“It is really good for morale and he is definitely a glass half-full type of guy.

“I think that is very important with the type of season we have had.

“We want optimists about the place. Body language, attitude and everything else is so important and I think that has to come from the staff first and foremost.”
