Cops probe fire at former post office

-

Detectives are probing a suspicious blaze at a disused Paisley post office.

Fire crews scrambled to Walker Street, in the west end of the town, to reports of a fire at a derelict building on Thursday afternoon.

Officers now believe the site was deliberately torched and have launched a hunt for the firebugs involved.

Members of the public reported seeing smoke coming from the former post office at around 1.30pm and called the Fire Service.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said there were no injuries reported at the abandoned building.

He said: “We received a call at 1.34pm to a report of a building fire in that area and mobilised four appliances. There were no casualties.”

Four fire engines, including a high reach appliance were on scene throughout the afternoon as the road remained closed for several hours.

Paisley police are investigating the wilful fire raising incident after several seats of fire were found in the building, indicating it was started on purpose.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Police are investigating a wilful fireraising incident at a derelict building in Paisley’s Walker Street, around 1.30pm on Thursday, December 13.

“An initial investigation by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service found that it was likely the fire was stared deliberately.

“There were no causalities as a result of the fire.

“As a result we are now appealing to any witnesses who may have seen or heard anything suspicious around the time of the incident to get in touch with police.”

It’s understood the site has been frequented by drug users in the past and police are probing the possibility that a small fire set to help keep the boarded-up building warm may have got out of hand.

Anyone with information should call police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
