Dancers Alan and Audrey have their careers mapped out

-

A ten-year-old Paisley boy and his girl partner made a name for themselves in national dancing circles.

They won no fewer than 100 trophies and certificates in top competitions up and down the country, we reported in December 1980.

And they had only been dancing for two years.

Alan Waters of Findhorn Avenue, and Audrey McKinnon, 10, of Clydebank, won 18 first prizes in major contests.

The pair teamed up when they started going to the Bobbie Barr Dancing School, in Paisley.

Alan’s mother, Mary Waters, who doesn’t dance, was delighted with her son’s success.

She said: “It’s all due to Mr Barr’s dedication and their great enthusiasm.

“Alan wants to go professional when he’s old enough. “They have a great future.” And Alan’s dad Gordon drove the children wherever the action took them. Mrs Waters didn’t complain. She said: “If this is what they want then we will help them as much as we can.”

Alan’s brother and sister – Gordon, 12, and Debbie, 14, both took up dancing.

But Gordon gave up when he went to secondary school.

Mrs Waters added: “There is a lot of pressure to stop when they reach secondary school.

“That’s why Gordon finished.

“But I’m pretty certain Alan will persevere.”
