New Starbucks is on the menu for Paisley

- CHRIS TAYLOR

Starbucks will open a new drive-thru near Paisley town centre under fresh plans.

The coffee giant has been given permission to set-up shop yards from West College Scotland.

The diner could be built opposite a gym and budget shop after blueprints were rubber-stamped by planners.

Hamcap unveiled details for the project in a report to council chiefs.

It stated: “The site is located within the car park area of Central Paisley Retail Park on Renfrew Road.

“The site forms part of an established park with a mix of leisure and retail use.

“The siting of the proposed coffee shop is orientated towards the retail park unit, which faces onto Renfrew Road.

“The proposed development would not have any adverse impact on the character and amenity of the area.”

The firm is the latest to announce expansion into Renfrewshire.

Costa Coffee, Taco Bell and Bella Italia have all announced plans to move to the Phoenix retail park.

Tim Hortons opened at St James’ Business Centre last month – the last remaining part of the Rootes car factory in Linwood.

It is the company’s only drive-thru branch in Europe.

The Canadian company will also open a coffee shop yards away from the mooted Starbucks on Renfrew Road.

Bosses revealed the cafe could be running within weeks at the Wallneuk Retail Park.

The centre is being built on the grounds of a former bowling alley and is scheduled to welcome customers this month.

Dozens of jobs will be created by the outlets.

Starbucks runs branches in Glasgow Airport, Braehead Shopping Centre and at the Phoenix Retail Park.

Chiefs insist it will not adversely affect traffic or families living nearby.

The report added: “There are no residential properties immediately adjacent to the site that would potentially be impacted on due to the nature of the use.

“Indeed, the character of Renfrew Road is commercial in nature and has a number of restaurant drive-thru uses located there.

“The proposed drive-thru coffee shop is of a type and nature that is consistent with the character of Renfrew Road.”
