Gym member slams club for ‘filthy’ facilities

- DAVID CAMPBELL

A frustrated member of a high- end gym has blasted bosses after claims a bloodied plaster was left in a shower for four days.

The man, who has asked to remain anonymous, hit out at dirty changing rooms and broken kit at the David Lloyd Club in Renfrew.

Photographs show shower heads hanging from the wall, grubby floors and out of commission equipment at the £70-a-month fitness centre.

The disgruntled member, who has been going to the gym for more than five years, claims management have not invested membership fees on basic maintenance.

He told the Paisley Daily Express: “The main problem area is the male changing facilities. They are in very poor condition.

“There is mould around showers and lockers are not cleaned.

“I like to use the same shower every day and for four or five days recently there was a bloody plaster in it.

“It was disgusting.

“In the male changing room area there are shower heads hanging off walls and holes.”

The man says the problems at the Arkleston Road club also include broken kit.

“On a regular basis machines are not working, there are signs on them saying out of order.

“When you ask management they say they are getting it fixed soon, but they can lie for weeks not working,” he added.

“There is a vent in the main gym which is covered in dust or dirt.

“The place needs investment immediately. The staff on the front desk and in the gym itself are great, really friendly and helpful.

“But the management need to look at spending money to get the place up to scratch.”

He insists the problems at the facility which boasts an outdoor pool, can be fixed and he doesn’t want to cancel his membership over them.

“I enjoy coming here. There is a good community of people and it would be a shame to lose that.

“We all just want the level of cleanliness to be raised and for maintenance to be carried out when its needed and not left for weeks on end.

“Paying members should not have to experience ongoing broken fittings and machines and these filthy conditions.

“The management are ruining this club.”

A spokeswoman for the gym said: “We take member satisfaction very seriously at David Lloyd Leisure and are concerned to hear of the issues that this member has raised.

“Undoubtedly these are not the standards we expect in our clubs, and have listened to this feedback carefully, including carrying out a full investigation of every point.

“Most importantly, we are pleased to confirm that we had already agreed plans to invest over £ 600,000 to significantly upgrade the facilities at the club; which will we believe address all member concerns. Work starts this week and by early April we will have completely refurbished all locker rooms and showers, as well as built a new luxury spa pool, steam room and sauna.

“Outside areas will also be undergoing a facelift, with new landscaping, car park barriers and resurfacing of the entrance road.

“At the same time we have appointed a new general manager and made a number of changes to the leadership team at the club.

“We’re fully committed to delivering the very best member experience, and believe that these improvements will position David Lloyd Renfrew as the leading premium health and fitness club in the area.”
