Ryan salutes his battlers

- Craig Ritchie

Ryan Flynn heralded his Buddies for putting their bodies on the line as St Mirren kick- started their survival bid with a draw at Pittodrie.

The point may not have been exactly what Saints wanted but Flynn reckons if the side can replicate that type of gritty display for the remainder of the season then they have every chance of staying in the Premiership.

The Buddies midfielder singled out the defence for praise, but believes that determination was evident all over the pitch.

Flynn said: “We didn’t give any clear-cut opportunities. Everybody was putting their bodies on the line and that is what we have got to do between now and the end of the season.

“The backline was tremendous but I think that was also evident throughout the whole team. The shape of the team made it very difficult for Aberdeen.

“It’s a good point but we would have obviously been happier with the three. Considering what we put into the game, I think we more than deserved a draw but it would have been nice to have been able to see it out for the three points.

“Before the game we spoke about the fact that we can’t keep conceding from set pieces, so that was disappointing for their equaliser because that got them back into the game.

“We will have a closer look at the game but I think we have to take the positives from it.

“The fact that you are coming away from Pittodrie disappointed to draw 2-2 is a real positive , because it showed how we played.”

St Mirren are back on the road this weekend as they travel to the capital to take on high-flying Hearts at Tynecastle.

The Buddies have endured mixed fortunes against the Jambos in recent times, with one win and one defeat to their name this season.

The campaign’s first match-up ended in a humbling 4-1 defeat away from home which later resulted in the sacking of Alan Stubbs.

However, the Buddies then secured a much- needed 2- 0 win over Craig Levein’s side thanks to an Adam Hammill wonder-strike.

Flynn admits any trip to Tynecastle can be difficult, but insists the squad should now be full of confidence.

He added: “The performance we produced against Aberdeen is what we need again. We have got to get another good week’s training under our belt. Hearts away is another tough game, but we are looking forward to it.”
