Drunken yob called cops ‘spastics’ after he staggered out bar

- RON MOORE

A foul- mouthed lout branded cops“spastics”and invited them to perform a sex act on him.

Abusive Stephen Kent, 52, turned the air blue with hateful and obscene sexual language following a bevvy session at a boozer.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard Kent was seen staggering out of the Western Bar at Hairst Street, Renfrew, by police officers who were concerned for his welfare.

However when constables spoke with him, he became hostile and aggressive, despite repeated attempts by officers to defuse the situation by persuading him to go home.

Fiscal depute John Penman told the court: “At around 11.45pm, police officers on uniform mobile patrol were in a marked police vehicle, which was stationery outside the Western Bar, Hairst Street, Renfrew.

“They observed the accused exiting and noted he had been drinking as he was extremely intoxicated.

“He approached the police vehicle and spoke to the police officers. “At first he was pleasant.

“He then became abusive.

“He referred to the police as ‘a pair of c***s.’

“Then called them ‘ f***** g spastics.’

“He was warned by police to go away and make his way home.”

He added that Kent then leaned in the driver’s window and made a sexually explicit remark to the officers.

Kent was arrested and taken into custody, but he continued with the abuse and vile language during the journey to the police station in Govan on January 25, 2018.

Yesterday Kent, formerly from Paisley who had been staying at homeless accommodation at Abercorn Street, but now living at Simons Crescent, Renfrew, pleaded guilty to charges of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner in that he shouted and swore at police, acted in an aggressive manner, and uttered offensive and sexual remarks.

Defence agent Kevin Brady said: “My client would like to apologise unreservedly to the police officers who to their credit had avoided arresting him, but he wouldn’t take a telling.

“He wouldn’t desist and ended up being arrested for this. There is some mitigation for this.

“He was previously homeless in Paisley but secured a new tenancy in Renfrew.

“He had registered with the health services but his previous package of care had not been transferred and he decided to self medicate with alcohol.

“This left him acting in a disgraceful manner.”

Sheriff Craig Harris branded his conduct “unacceptable,” but said Kent had been making attempts to sort himself out.

He fined him £225, reduced from £250 because of his admission of guilt.
