Habbie Murphy smashes Scottish heptathlon record out of the park

-

Habbies athlete Andrew Murphy smashed a 20-year-old Scottish record as he starred at the Emirates Arena.

The GB international and Kilbarchan ace landed the Scottish Men’s heptathlon indoor record – with a superb performance over the weekend.

Murphy, who went close to this record a few weeks ago in the Cardiff International Meet, took his tally to 5,662 points with a fine run over 1,000m in the last event.

This means the Kilbarchan athlete surpassed the record held by Jamie Quarry (5640) – which had stood for two decades. It was also a native record for Murphy.

A scottishathletics spokesman said: “Many congratulations to Andrew, his family, coach Colin Sinclair and all involved in his development at Kilbarchan AAC and, previously, Ayr Seaforth.”

Adding to the combined events feelgood factor on a great weekend was yet another U-20 heptathlon record – with Edinburgh AC athlete Scott Connal the latest to break the mark.

On the women’s side of things, there were strong performances by visiting athletes from England and Ireland in a number of the age categories.

The Senior and U-20 titles went to Joanna Rowland of Crawley ( 4130) and Steph Driscoll of Liverpool (3621) respectively. Livingston’s Eve Allison took bronze at U-20.

Murray Fotheringham of Giffnock North took the U-17 gold with a tally of 4785 points.

Katie Burr of VP-Glasgow won gold in the U-17 Women’s event with a tally of 3480 points.
