Roadshow will help reduce the risk of cancer

-

Nurses from Cancer Research UK will visit Paisley regularly this spring with a special roadshow.

The Cancer Awareness Roadshow is dedicated to helping everyone know how to reduce the risk of cancer and help spot it early.

The roadshow will be at the Piazza shopping centre between 10am and 4pm on Tuesday and returns on Tuesday, April 30 and then fortnightly throughout spring.

Visitors can turn up on the day without an appointment or schedule a repeat visit to get free ongoing support from nurses Christine Campbell and Fiona Easton.

Christine and Fiona can provide information about how to help spot cancer earlier – when it is more likely to be treated successfully - and encourage people to go to their GP with any health concerns.

Christine, who is a CRUK senior cancer awareness nurse, said: “Experts estimate around four-in-10 cases of cancer could be prevented each year in the UK.

“We are looking forward to talking to lots of people from around Paisley about the steps they can take to help reduce their risk of cancer through changes like stopping smoking, reducing alcohol intake and keeping a healthy weight.”

The nurses will chat to visitors about ways they can help to stack their odds against cancer by making positive health changes like stopping smoking or cutting down on alcohol. There’s also a chance to find out more about FIT, the new bowel screening test which was introduced in Scotland in November 2017.

The new test, offered to people aged 50 to 74 every two years, is one of the most effective way of finding the disease early.

It is easier to use than the old test as only one sample has to be collected.

Information is also available on healthy eating and there’s a chance to take home a portion plate, which shows the recommended amounts of salad or vegetables, protein and carbohydrates to try to eat each meal time.

Around 88 people in Scotland daily receive the news that they have cancer and the number of people being diagnosed with the disease has reached around 32,000 cases every year.
