- KENNETH SPEIRS

A Paisley couple who were born in the same hospital, went to the same school and travelled to work on the same train have just celebrated 65 years of marriage.

Lily and John Clark both saw the light of day 89 years ago in Paisley’s former Barshaw Hospital and now more than six decades later can look back on raising a family of four.

Mrs Clark said it is hard to believe she and her husband have reached such a milestone.

“You just get on with things and before you know it 65 years have passed,” she said.

Lily, who is the daughter of Rev Mark Frame – well known as the minister for the deaf in Paisley – and John, who live together in Gallowhill, both went to the former Camphill School in Paisley.

“In those days boys and girls were separated at first, they didn’t mix until fourth year,” Mrs Clark said.

“But we would meet at school dances. “And then we travelled to work together on the train.

“I worked for J&P Coats in Glasgow and John worked for the railway at Glasgow Central station.”

Romance blossomed and the couple got engaged in September 1953.

They were married in Paisley’s United Original Secession Church in Wellmeadow in 1954.

Four children followed – Brian, Iain, Alison and Janice – and the couple also have the company of six grandchildren to delight in.

On their 60th wedding anniversary, Mr and Mrs Clark received a message of congratulations from the Queen.

The next time the Queen would send them greetings would be on their 70th anniversary.

But therewere plenty of congratulations as the family got together for a picnic to mark their blue sapphire anniversary.

Daughter Janice said: “I feel to reach this stage together is a great achievement.”
