LEE MAIR LAYS IT ON THE LINE JIM’S THE MAN FOR THE JOB

- CRAIG RITCHIE

Lee Mair reckons club legend Jim Goodwin is the perfect man to take over St Mirren.

The Paisley club are understood to have singled out their 2013 League Cup winning skipper as their number one target to replace the outgoing Oran Kearney.

The Buddies are expected to move quickly for the 37-year-old.

His former Saints and Stockport teammate reckons the Buddies would be daft to look beyond the Alloa gaffer.

Mair told Express Sport : “I understand why Goodie is the frontrunner because he loves the club and the fans love him.

“It is a big jump for him from what he has achieved so far but I believe that he is destined for bigger and better things.

“He never went for an interview last time because he didn’t feel like he was ready – I believe that he is now.

“He is determined, he is focused and he is driven. He will go and do well wherever he goes.

“The vacancy is perfect timing. It is perfect timing for St Mirren and it is perfect timing for Goodie.

“It is the perfect match.”

Goodwin’s rise in the management ranks has been rapid after replacing Jack Ross in the Recreation Park dugout after the former Wasps boss moved to Paisley in 2016.

He guided Alloa to promotion via the playoffs in his first full season in charge before keeping the part-timers in the Championship against all odds.

He recently looked certain to land the Dundee job before the Dens Park side opted to hand the gig to youth coach James McPake.

Mair believes the setback will only drive Goodwin on to be a success.

And he pinpointed his connection with the club and the fans as a sign of potential success.

He added: “What the club has done in the past couple of years is have people that don’t necessarily have that connection with the club.

“Having people involved that love the club and have feelings for the club is huge. If they appoint Goodie it will be great for the whole community. The fans will love it and it will give the players a lift as well.”
