Council to wheel out new bin collection to town for recycling
A new bin collection service for Erskine will start in August as part of a drive to improve recycling and lower the amount of waste sent to landfill.
The majority of Renfrewshire moved to the new service in December last year, but a more bespoke approach was required for the Park Mains, Bargarran, Rashielee and North Barr areas of Erskine to accommodate local access issues.
From the end of August, households will use a new green bin or sack to recycle plastic, cans and cartons, while blue bins and sacks will be for paper, card and cardboard only.
Green bins can also accommodate glass while those on a sack collection would continue to take glass to their nearest recycling point.
The blue and green recycling bins or sacks will be collected every two weeks on an alternate basis and the food caddy will continue to be collected weekly.
The grey general waste bin or sack will remain every two weeks in these areas as it has both types of collection and it is not feasible for residents to store sacks for more than two weeks.
It is also not cost effective to have different collection frequencies in such a small area.
Information packs specific to each household in the area will be delivered to ensure residents are fully informed of their new service in advance and will include a service guide, a collection calendar and stickers to be placed onto their bins outlining what goes in each of them.
A series of roadshows will be held in Erskine throughout July in various venues to allow residents to ask any questions and find out more about the new service – with the first one taking place on July 9 at Erskine Library.
Councillor Cathy McEwan, convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board, said: “We’ve been working hard to support residents across Renfrewshire to settle in to the new system and it is beginning to become normal routine for people now.
“Our recycling rate is increasing and we’re seeing less waste being transported to landfill which is extremely encouraging and I thank everyone for doing their bit to recycle as much as they possibly can.
“These areas of Erskine needed a more bespoke approach to ensure that the service can work effectively and we’re confident that residents will adapt just as quickly as the rest of Renfrewshire has.
