Kelburne slump to seventh place

-

Kelburne’s winning run came to a crashing halt as they crumbled to a 137 run defeat against league leaders Dumfries.

It leaves them in seventh place and well off the pacesetters with one game to play before the midway point of the season.

Having won the toss and electing to bat in ideal conditions, Dumfries wasted no time in building an imposing total to defend.

Each of the top six batsmen reached double figures as Adam Malik top scored with 45 and Alan Davidson added a further 44 before being run out by James Cook.

Kelburne’s bowlers toiled in the conditions with overseas professional Roshan Jayatissa the standout performer, taking four wickets for 38 runs in his ten over spell.

Despite Jayatissa’s best efforts, Dumfries managed to rack up what would be a match-winning total of 210 for nine from their 50 overs.

In contrast to the first innings, only one Kelburne player would reach double figures in the run chase as opener Matt McMillin top scored with 22.

Wickets fell at regular intervals with Alan Davidson and Daniel Armstrong combining to remove five Kelburne batsmen as they were bowled out for just 73.

The defeat ends a three-match winning run for Kelburne as they were looking to push in to the top half of the table and leaves them just above the relegation places after six games.

Captain Ross Maclean said:“It was a disappointing effort particularly with the bat trying to chase on a good wicket.

“We bowled well in what are friendly conditions for batting, especially Roshan with his four wickets, and we were pretty happy restricting them to just 210.

“At the half we thought if we went about our business properly we could chase it down and it just wasn’t to be.

“Some good bowling and one or two individual errors on our part meant we never gave ourselves a chance in what was a winnable game.

“They are a good side, but we feel like we could have missed an opportunity to continue our winning run.”
