Guitar heroes have a blast at music camp

- CARLA TALBOT

Mini stars in the making have been rocking out during the summer holiday at a popular music school.

There were plenty of top performances by youngsters taking part in the Diane Mitchell School of Rock and Pop as the annual programme marked its busiest year yet.

The guitar heroes formed a band for the week and had a go at trying out a number of different instruments and even writing their own songs.

Taught by Paisley musician and tutor at the music school, Johnny Barr, the kids had a blast rocking out to their very own tunes.

Now in its third year, the School of Rock and Pop is proving to be a hit.

Owner of the Brick Lane school, Diane Mitchell, said musical summer camp is a great experience for the children who come along.

She added: “The kids really enjoy it.

“It’s a great confidence booster for them and it helps them make lots of new friends and work as a team to make music together.

“They create their own songs and perform them at the end of the week.

“In most songs, the main themes are about motivation and reaching your potential.

“They form a band and have someone on vocals with others playing the likes of guitar and drums.

A partnership between Paisley Museum and a women’s group is helping bring the past to life.

Staff from the museum are working with several organisations ahead of the refurbishment of the building.

One of them is women’s group Kairos and its

“Some of them already play instruments, but some don’t and this gives them a chance to try different instruments out to see if they like anything.

“It does inspire some of them to want to start playing something.

“It teaches them some valuable skills while having fun playing music together.”

Running for a week, the children went on to perform their original songs written with Johnny at a performance for their parents.

The musical summer camp is open to children aged six to 14 and still has one more week to go, from August 5 to 8.

project manager Katy Wilson-Scott, said: “We’ve been coproducing stories for the museum and learning about the history of the local area.

“We had a tour around the museum before it closed and they gave us a presentation and talked

about the objects they have related to women.

“The one we were most interested in was the Women’s Cooperative Guild in Paisley.

“We thought there were similarities with what they did and what we’re trying to do.

“We’re going to create a banner and the museum will film the process of it and show it at the museum.”

Kairos holds a weekly drop-in on Thursdays, from 10am till noon, at 16 Quarry Street, as well as museum workshops on a Monday, from 1pm till 3pm.
