Tahir set for World Cup duty

- CRAIG RITCHIE

Paisley bowler Hamza Tahir has booked his spot in Scotland’s World Cup League Two squad.

The former Ferguslie ace has been selected in the 14-strong squad that will take on Oman and Papua New Guinea for the clashes at Mannofield, Aberdeen.

The action starts later this month, with Scotland starting the competition on August 15.

The tournament provides more competitive cricket for Scotland’s men, playing 36 One Day Internationals (ODIs) over two and half years from August 2019 to January 2022, where teams are just two steps away from the Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Simon Smith, Scotland’s high performance manager, said: “We look forward to welcoming Oman and Papua New Guinea for what is sure to be an exciting series.

“We are particularly pleased to be bringing international cricket back to Aberdeen, and I’m sure the people of the north east will come out united and determined to support their team as it embarks on the next chapter of its journey.

“Our men have an excellent record at Mannofield, so we’ll be looking to make home advantage count.

“ICC Cricket World Cup League Two is our pathway to India 2023 and the next cycle of Super League.

“Making a strong start here will set us up well for the challenges that lie ahead.”
