Neilston boss: Cup clash was a nightmare from the start

-

NEILSTON.............................1 J’STONE BURGH..................1 (Neilston win 4-2 on penalties)

Neilston boss Derek Carson admits he is relieved the Sectional League Cup is over following a nightmare start to the season.

The Farmer’s Boys are without a win from their three group stage clashes against Arthurlie, Benburb and now Johnstone Burgh.

Brian Ashe was the man on target for Neilston, while Mark Garner found the back of the net for the Burgh.

Despite his side claiming a bonus point from the penalty shoot-out, Carson blasted his players following a lack lustre performance.

Carson told Express Sport:“I am just glad that the competition is over for us because it has been a nightmare from the very start.

“We have played well in a couple of games but injuries and unavailability have really hampered us.

“We have not been able to field full squads and had to draft in trialists.

“We played well in the games against Arthurlie and Benburb but the Johnstone Burgh game saw a lot of players let themselves down.

“We found out a lot about our players from the performance and I think we now know what our strongest team is heading into tomorrow’s League games.

“The boys were only really in the game for ten minutes – and that is when Brian scored.

“We can’t afford to play anywhere close to as bad as that in the league because if we do then we won’t be even close to be where we are wanting to be this season.

“I’m willing to give the boys the benefit of the doubt because they have played three games in quick succession.

“But they have been warned that we can’t do that again.”
