Injured Cooke out for rest of the year

-

St Mirren boss Jim Goodwin has confirmed Cody Cooke will be out for up to nine months — leaving him with one fit striker.

As revealed by Express Sport earlier this week, Cookie was expected to miss at least two months of the season with a knee injury.

But the Irishman concedes that the forward will now be missing from the squad until the new year at the very least.

Goodwin said: “It’s a lot more serious than we thought originally. “It will probably be surgery. “You’ll be looking at the new year before he is back at least.”

Cooke has had to work hard for a spot in the first team ever since arriving from Truro City last summer.

And Goodwin has sympathy for the front man after being impressed with Cooke’s efforts since he took the reins.

Goodwin said: “I’m always gutted for any player who gets injured.

“We didn’t expect it to be as bad as what it is but his attitude since I came in the door has been top notch.

“He is a fit boy who works hard and wants to do well.

“We were all desperate for him to be OK.

“We had hoped for maybe a month or so but it looks a lot more serious than that.

“He is a big part of the group and a great character within the dressing room.

“We’re gutted for him but we’ll do all we can to get him back to full speed.

“The boys will rally around him and keep his spirits up.”
