Serial shoplifter told to kick alcohol addiction

-

A thief caged for a shoplifting spree was also nabbed targeting a petrol station.

Andrew Michie, 34, swiped booze from the Tesco garage in Paisley’s Renfrew Road.

He was locked up in April for a 330-day stretch for a series of raids on firms.

Michie admitted theft when he was hauled back into the dock at Paisley Sheriff Court.

Defence lawyer Lyndsey Jefferson insisted her client was ready to turn his back on crime.

She said: “He has had a significant dependency on alcohol. He is motivated now to address that difficulty.

“He has undertaken a period of detoxication in custody.

“There needs to be something in place for him.

“He has to engage, otherwise he is going to end up in the exact same place. “He would be willing to comply.

“He is aware of the disposals available to the court.”

Michie hit the petrol station on February 5. He managed to get away with alcohol and food.

He returned just two days later to lift more booze.

The crook also targeted Holland and Barrett on Paisley’s High Street the same week.

He loaded up on dietary supplements at the health store.

Michie was jailed for nearly a year for shoplifting in April.

He swiped alcohol and sweets from Tesco in Paisley’s East Lane last September.

Earlier this year, he was nabbed after pocketing protein powder worth almost £100 from B&M on nearby Renfrew Road.

He targeted Tesco again just weeks later and stole two bottles of wine then bombarded staff with foul- mouth abuse when they confronted him.

Michie earlier claimed he turned to drink after his brother and wife died in separate car crashes.

He is due to be released from his current prison stint in September.

Sheriff James Spy warned he could be jailed again if he fails to kick his drink habit and stop offending.

He said: “By that time, you will have been released. If, by then, the report indicates you are not taking advantage of the support available, it will be a custodial disposal.”

Michie, of Gallowhill Road, Paisley, has been ordered to return to the dock in September.
