Renfrew make the most of washout

- ANDY MCNAIR ST MIRREN

Only Renfrew’s match at Petershill beat the rain on Saturday.

And that’s because of the their opponents’ 4G pitch.

Junior games at Neilston, Arthurlie and Johnstone Burgh were postponed due to waterlogged pitches.

Renfrew took full advantage of their tie to beat lowly Petershill 2-0.

A goal in each half saw Frew move up to fourth place in the West Region Championship table – leapfrogging Arthurlie in the process.

Scott Morton opened the scoring on 15 minutes to lead at the break and Bob Campbell added a second on 65 minutes for the visitors.

Renfrew have a game in hand on leaders Darvel and are four points behind this weekend’s opponents Cumbernauld United, who they play at New Western Park.

E l s e w h e re in the Championship, it was a day off for both players and loyal fans.

Neilston versus Shotts Bon Accord was one of the games that was postponed due to the heavy rain but striker Paul Stewart did still have a chance to celebrate.

He and his wife Adele welcomed new baby daughter Mila Ruby at the weekend and the club’s Twitter account congratulated the couple on their baby’s safe arrival.

Arthurlie’s pitch also didn’t survive the overnight downpour and their tie with Whitletts Victoria was postponed.

In League One, Johnstone Burgh had been confident of getting their game on, tweeting on Friday night that despite the rain, Keanie Park was holding up well and it “was looking good so far”.

But after even more rain through the night and on Saturday morning, the pitch subsequently failed an inspection and the clash with Yoker Athletic was called off.

Burgh have a 100 per cent record in the league but slipped to fifth place after a third consecutive Saturday without a game.

They do have three games in hand over several of their rivals.
