Things are starting to take shape
It was fantastic to see spades hit the ground last week as the first steps are taken to create the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland (AMIDS) here in Renfrewshire.
With up to 6,000 jobs set to be created, this is a fantastic opportunity to put Renfrewshire at the heart of Scotland’s bright manufacturing future and build on the rich heritage we already have in the area.
We’re in a privileged position as we lead the creation of the new district, in partnership with the Scottish Government and Scottish Enterprise, as we build the enabling infrastructure of new roads, bridges, cycling routes and pedestrian walkways – as Scotland’s manufacturing sector gets set for a £535milllion boost per year.
Next to Glasgow Airport, we are transforming a 52-hectare site at the heart of the district into Netherton Campus, a home for companies to harness new technologies and access cutting edge research which has already been confirmed as the location for the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland and the Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre.
This will only strengthen the already growing manufacturing industry we have with nearby Westway Park being Scotland’s largest fully enclosed industrial distribution and office park, and Inchinnan Business Park being home to more than 30 renowned businesses, including Rolls Royce
PLC, Peak Scientific and the University of Strathclyde’s Advanced Forming Research Centre.
The new infrastructure is scheduled to be completed in early 2021 and will provide a sector-leading environment for businesses, large and small, to base themselves here in Renfrewshire.
With thousands of jobs on the way, this will benefit generations now and in the future, and it’s exciting to envision pupils from across our schools leading the way in the manufacturing industry from right here in Renfrewshire.
The district will have benefits for everyone across the area so to learn more visit www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/ amids
Continuing the exciting news for the area, I was delighted to see the first wave of funding from the £1.87million Green Spaces, Parks and Play Areas and Villages Investment Fund awarded to a variety of local community groups.
Thanks to inspiring volunteers, brand-new play equipment will be created in five parks including Elderslie, Howwood, Glenburn, Paisley and Renfrew and will transform the play opportunities for young people in these communities.
More than £209,000 will be invested into these parks from this first round of funding and the impact on these communities will be immeasurable, but it can only happen if people take the time to apply.
I must salute the hard work and dedication of the local groups who put forward their applications. Their desire to make a difference to their local community and provide a welcoming, inclusive environment for young people in their area is astounding – and I’d encourage everyone to follow their lead.
Our fantastic staff members will support you every step of the way so make the first move and get in touch with the team now via www. renfrewshire.gov.uk/greenspacesfund
