Drink-driver was spotted with bottle of booze after accident

- CHRIS TAYLOR

A drink-driver ploughed into a parked motor then stumbled onto the street clutching a bottle of Buckfast.

Dad- of- two Mark Taylor, 28, was more than four times the limit when he tumbled from his car.

He was spotted after onlookers heard the late-night smash.

Taylor was banned from the road after he admitted breaking the law at Paisley Sheriff Court.

Prosecutor Laura Wilcox told how he was spotted boozing in a bar before the crash.

She said: “He spent the day consuming alcohol in the local pub.

“Around 10.10pm, he was driving his grey Vauxhall Corsa.

“He was the only person in the vehicle.

“He veered out of his lane for an unknown reason and collided with a stationary vehicle.

“Witnesses in their home address made their way into the street as a result of the noise of the collision.

“They observed Taylor sitting in the driver’s seat.

“He exited the vehicle and both witnesses described him as being ‘unsteady’ on his feet.

“They believed he was dazed as a result of the collision.

“They noted he was carrying a green mid-sized bottle of Buckfast tonic wine.

“Both attempted to speak with him and noted he was slurring his words. “Police arrived a very short time later. “They traced him a short distance away.”

Taylor ploughed into a parked car in Beith Road in Johnstone.

Police detained him and took him to the police office after the crash on September 2.

He was ordered to take a breath test.

He blew 93 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 ml of breath.

The limit is just 22mcg.

Defence lawyer Terry Gallanagh revealed his client turned to drink to cope with mental health problems. He said: “He has clinical depression. “He can often find himself in a very dark place.

“He has a partner and two children, aged nine and four. He supports them. He continues to work, he will not lose his job.

“He apologises.”

Sheriff Simon Fraser rapped him for the offence.

He said: “This was a very considerable reading.

“I cannot limit the disqualification to the minimum because of it.

“You will be disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 18 months.”

Taylor, of Spey Place, Johnstone, was ordered to pay £500.
