Justice boss backs Paisley mum’s Knife Angel campaign
Scottish Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf has wished Paisley mum Allison Kelly good luck in her bid to bring the Knife Angel Sculpture to the town.
Allison Kelly, 66, hopes the giant structure made from confiscated blades will honour 32-year-old Paul, who was stabbed to death outside a Bath pub on New Year’s Eve in 2007.
The striking artwork tours the country and Allison wants it to come to Paisley.
Mr Yousaf has written to Allison to lend his support to her plan, but pointed out it’s down to Renfrewshire Council to organise.
He wrote: “I was sorry to learn about the loss of your son and consider your strength and desire to use this tragic experience to educate young people on the dangers of carrying a knife, inspiring.
“Thank you for making us aware of your campaign to bring the Knife Angel to Scotland.
“I understand that British Ironworks have been in contact with representatives in Edinburgh, Inverness, East Dunbartonshire and North Lanarkshire about coming to Scotland.”
He added: “It would be for each local authority, including Renfrewshire, to determine if they wish to host the Knife Angel in their area.
“I understand that you have already made contact with representatives at Renfrewshire Council and you are exploring this opportunity with them.
“Again, I would like to thank you for taking the time to contact us and I wish you all the best in bringing the Knife Angel to Paisley.”
SNP MP Mhairi Black has thrown her support behind the idea and Renfrewshire Council officials are also working behind the scenes to make it a reality.
Allison hopes that bringing the Knife Angel will help educate young people on the dangers of carrying knives.
